Solon sits on Iowa Highway 1 between Cedar Rapids and Iowa City, and Passion Exteriors serves it from our home base in Cedar Rapids, a short drive away. Solon grew nearly 50 percent between 2010 and 2020, from about 2,000 residents to just over 3,000, and the city keeps adding 20 to 36 new single-family homes a year in subdivisions like Windmill Estates and Trail Ridge Estates. That growth means Solon has two kinds of roofs: newer shingle roofs that haven't faced their first serious hailstorm yet, and older in-town roofs carrying decades of freeze-thaw cycles, wind, and sun. This area gets hit more often than its quiet reputation suggests. The August 10, 2020 derecho damaged 314 trees at Lake Macbride State Park alone, closing parts of the park for weeks. On March 31, 2023, tornadoes moved through Johnson County and damaged homes on the west side of Solon — right where new construction was underway — along with a farm just north of town. And hail is the steady background threat: more than 40 hail events have been reported within ten miles of Solon since 2004, with stones up to golf-ball size. If your roof is more than a few years old, it may have taken hits you've never seen from the ground.
After every major storm, out-of-area crews sweep through Eastern Iowa signing contracts, then follow the next weather map out of state — and when they leave, so does your warranty. How do I know if hail actually damaged my roof? You usually can't — hail bruises shingles in ways that only show up close. We climb up, photograph what we find, and give you an honest answer — even when that answer is that your roof is fine.
My house is only a few years old. Should I still get it inspected? New roofs aren't storm-proof — the 2023 tornado damaged homes in one of Solon's newest areas. After any big storm, a quick look costs nothing — our inspections are free.
