When a hailstorm or high wind rolls through Eastern Iowa, one of the first questions homeowners ask is whether insurance will cover the damage. It can — but the process runs through you, not your contractor. Here is how it works, plainly.
Iowa law is clear that roofing contractors are not insurance adjusters. You file and manage your own claim. Our job is to give you rock-solid documentation so you walk into that process with evidence, and to meet your adjuster on-site to point out exactly what the storm did. We inspect, we document, and we’ll be there when your adjuster is — but the claim itself is yours to control.
A hailstorm, a straight-line wind event, or a heavy downpour hits your roof. Sometimes the damage is obvious — missing shingles, dented gutters, water in the attic. Often it isn’t visible from the ground at all.
Write down the date of the storm and take dated photos of anything you can safely see from the ground. Don’t climb on your roof. This first record matters later.
This is where we come in. We do a thorough, no-pressure inspection of your roof, siding, and gutters and produce a written report with photos of every area of concern. That report becomes the backbone of your file. Start with a free roof inspection.
You — the homeowner — call your insurance company or agent and open the claim. You control it from here: you decide what to file, what to accept, and how to proceed. We never file or manage a claim on your behalf, because in Iowa that is your right and responsibility.
Your insurer sends an adjuster to inspect the damage in person. We can be present for that visit to walk the adjuster through the damage on-site and make sure nothing we documented gets overlooked. We don’t negotiate — we point out and explain what the storm did, so you and the adjuster are looking at the same evidence.
Your insurer reviews the adjuster’s findings and issues a decision — approval, partial approval, or denial — along with any scope of work and payment.
Once your claim is settled and you’ve chosen your contractor, the work gets done. If you hire us, we build to your insurer’s approved scope and to manufacturer spec as an Owens Corning Preferred Contractor. Learn more about our storm damage repair across Eastern Iowa.
The stronger your file, the smoother your claim. Before you file, gather:
Keep everything in one folder. Good documentation doesn’t guarantee an outcome, but it gives you evidence to stand on. Not sure what hail damage even looks like? Here’s how to spot hail damage on your roof.
Adjusters draw a line between functional damage and cosmetic damage. Functional damage is impact that actually compromises your roof’s ability to shed water — not every ding qualifies. On asphalt shingles they look for granule loss that exposes the mat, bruising you can feel as a soft spot, and fresh, unweathered exposure that shows the damage is recent.
To judge how widespread it is, adjusters commonly use a test square: they mark off a ten-by-ten-foot area on each slope and count the qualifying hits inside it, comparing that hit density against a threshold to decide whether a slope needs replacement. They also check collateral targets like gutters, vents, AC condenser fins, and siding. Knowing this is exactly why a documented inspection helps — it shows the functional damage, not just surface marks. Iowa has a matching rule that many homeowners have never heard of. Under Iowa Administrative Code 191—15.44, when damaged materials are replaced and the new materials do not reasonably match in quality, color, or size, the insurer is to replace enough of the material to create a reasonably uniform appearance within the same line of sight.
In plain terms: if you stand at the corner of your house and can clearly see that new shingles or siding on one face don’t match the old, the rule speaks to matching what’s visible in that line of sight. The rule applies to both exterior and interior losses, and it states the insured should not bear cost beyond the deductible.
Two honest caveats: the rule allows exceptions on a case-by-case basis, and how it plays out depends on your specific policy. Always ask your insurer or agent how matching applies to your claim — we can point out where materials don’t match, but your insurer decides how the rule is applied.
After every big storm, out-of-town crews flood the area knocking on doors. Be careful. Never sign anything on your doorstep.
In particular, never sign an assignment of benefits or a contract before you’ve had time to read it, verify the company is licensed and local, and think it over. An assignment of benefits can hand your claim rights over to a contractor — that is not something to sign in a driveway under pressure. A legitimate local company will give you a written inspection and estimate and let you take your time. We’re a family-owned Cedar Rapids company, licensed, bonded, and insured, and we will never pressure you into a signature.
Will you handle my claim?
No — Iowa law is clear that contractors aren’t insurance adjusters. You file and manage your claim; we give you rock-solid documentation and meet your adjuster on-site to point out the damage.
How long do I have to file a claim?
It depends on your policy — most have deadlines for reporting storm damage, and they vary. Read your policy and call your insurer or agent promptly after a storm to confirm your specific window.
What if my claim is denied?
A denial isn’t always the end. Depending on your policy, you may be able to request a re-review or a second inspection to make sure nothing was missed. We can re-document the damage so you have a clear record to bring back to your insurer.
Does filing a claim raise my rates?
It might, and it depends on your insurer, your history, and the type of claim. Weather-related claims are often treated differently than at-fault claims, but there are no guarantees — ask your agent how a claim would affect your premium before you decide.
We’ll inspect it, document everything, and give you the evidence you need to walk into your claim with confidence. Call (319) 536-1924 or request your free estimate online.
